Chinese car manufacturer Geely has launched the construction of a major green methanol facility, which will produce 100,000 tonnes a year in its first phase before being scaled up to 500,000 tonnes a year.

The plant is being built in the Bayin Aobao Industrial Park in the Alxa League division of the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, which has seen a swathe of green hydrogen megaprojects launched in the past two years.

Geely had originally announced an ambitious plan to build a complex able to produce 500,000 tonnes a year of methanol in the first phase, while its final stage would have a staggering 100 million tonnes a year of production capacity.
